November Focus: Praying for the Lost

Next Sunday, November 8, we will have an opportunity to culminate our October focus of Supporting Our Missionaries by giving to GCOC’s annual Harvest Missions Fund. Every dollar of your contribution will be used in some way to help our mission partners proclaim the gospel of Christ around the world. So prayerfully consider what you will give.

 

As we enter a new month today, the focus of the Living Our Mission daily devotional readings moves from our missionaries to the people they (and we) are trying to reach in Extending the Kingdom. Reaching the lost begins with praying for the lost. Why? First, there is power in prayer. James 5:16 states that “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective,” and in the following verses, James gives an example of a person “just like us” whose prayer changed the course of events in the world. He then encourages us to turn sinners back to God through that same power.

 

Second, prayer helps us be more alert to opportunities for God to use us in answering those prayers. Colossians 4:2-6 reminds us to devote ourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful and making the most of every opportunity in our interactions with those outside of Christ.

 

Sometimes we don’t know what to ask for in praying for the lost. November’s daily readings will give us specific things to focus on as we pray. So beginning today, let’s devote ourselves to Praying for the Lost. Ask the Lord to put circumstances and people in their path that will draw them closer to Him. Who knows, He may answer that prayer by placing you in their lives!
