This Sunday, September 11,
memorial services will take place at churches, schools, libraries, beaches, parks, cemeteries, fire stations, and military bases across the country to commemorate the anniversary of the tragic terrorist attacks that rocked our nation fifteen years ago. On this National Day of Service and Remembrance, diverse people of all ages, races, and walks of life will come together to remember those who sacrificed their lives and in their honor, serve people in need through hands-on service projects. It will be a day of remembrance to promote national unity and service to others.
As humans, tangible reminders – things we can see, hear, taste or touch – help stimulate our memories of important people, places or events. Knowing this, Jesus established a memorial using common, everyday items that can be found anywhere in the world to help us as believers to recall and honor Him for His great sacrifice on our behalf.
As we come together this Sunday to worship and remember the Lord, let these tangible emblems take your mind back to the crowded streets and dusty roads of Palestine. As the bread softens in your mouth, think about Jesus’ body given in service to others, then bruised, beaten, whipped, crucified, and ultimately raised on the third day. As the taste of fruit from the vineyard lingers on your lips, picture His lifeblood oozing from the gashes on his back; trickling from His head, hands and feet; and flowing from the spear wound in His side. Let the memories prompt renewed conviction, commitment and unity.
But most of all, remember that He did it for you, and be thankful.
