…I was hungry and you gave me something to eat… Matthew 25:35
Nothing tugs at our hearts like the face of a child who is truly hungry. That’s why worldwide hunger relief organizations use pictures of hungry children from Third World countries to solicit donations. What we may not realize, however, is how many of those faces of hunger are right here in our own community.
A few years ago, we learned that 48% of the children in the Granbury public school system receive free or reduced price meals at school. Many of them were going hungry over the weekend because of inadequate food resources at home. In 2011, Granbury Church of Christ decided to do something to alleviate this problem and established a weekend food ministry called Bags for Baccus (a local elementary school) through our Christian Service Center. In the years since, the program has expanded into the formation of a local coalition of faith-based groups called Weekend Food for Kids to cover the food needs of these children at all of Granbury’s public school campuses. Last month, 2,638 WFK bags were distributed by nine organizations in Granbury. The CSC provided 608 of those bags at two schools, which were filled each week by a group from the Wednesday morning ladies’ Bible class.
For $15 a month, you can feed one child in need. If you would like to help, you can give your donation to the church office (clearly designated for Weekend Food for Kids, with checks payable to Granbury Church of Christ). For more information on this program, contact Jonna Eccles at the CSC. Your generosity can make a difference in the life and health of a child!
