In a society where drug use is rampant, ‘couch surfing’ among homeless children is common, and child abuse is at an all-time, where can a child go for help and a safe place to live? One answer is Foster’s Home for Children in Stephenville. Since 1960, Foster’s Home has provided for the needs of over 4,000 Texas children through residential group care, foster family care, and adoptions. The Home is financially supported by faithful individual donors and approximately 300 Churches of Christ throughout Texas, including Granbury Church of Christ.
GCOC’s partnership with Foster’s Home goes back more than 15 years. The church supports the home, not only financially, but in hands-on ways as well. A group of ladies goes to Foster’s Home once a month during the school year to prepare food for the children and staff of the 12 residential group homes. The GCOC youth group has conducted service projects on the campus. Royal Family Kids’ Camp, a week-long camp for abused and neglected children, was established and is largely staffed by GCOC members. Each summer, this camp serves a large number of children from Foster’s Home, and just a few weeks ago, the camp organizers made emergency arrangements to house the children at the campsite for a few days after Foster’s Home sustained tornado damage. GCOC members also serve on the Foster’s Home staff and board of directors.
April was Child Abuse Prevention Month. On this first day of May and beyond, let’s continue to pray and care for those who are most vulnerable in our society through our work and partnership with Foster’s Home. God will bless and multiply these efforts far beyond our greatest imagination.
