As a young girl raised on a farm, I saw firsthand what is involved in growing a crop as I watched my dad prepare the soil, plant the seeds, water the plants, trust God for the growth, and harvest the resulting fruit. I learned that successful farming entails doing a few basic things well with consistent effort and much patience.
In Scripture we see that the same basic steps are required to grow the kingdom of God. In fact, the apostle Paul uses the concept of farming to describe our partnership with God in growing His kingdom. In 1 Corinthians 3:6, 9 he says, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. For we are God’s fellow workers….” The Lord desires that we participate in His mission of reconciling people to Him.
Our mission partners, Lalo and Jamie Rocha, are prime examples of doing the basics well as they work toward growing God’s kingdom in Mexico City. They prepare the soil of people’s hearts through building relationships and serving their community. They plant the seed of God’s Word in one-on-one Bible studies and water it in Bible classes and small groups offered throughout the week. They trust God for the growth and then harvest the resulting fruit as people give their lives to the Lord and as they train and equip these new Christians to be servants and leaders in the church. With consistent effort and much patience, God is glorified and His kingdom is expanded.
The Rocha family is here with us this morning, and we will have a brief opportunity in our assembly today to hear more about their efforts. Please take a few moments to greet them and thank them for partnering with us and with God in growing His kingdom.
