"And who is my neighbor?” Jesus’ response to the law expert who posed this question, as recorded in Luke 10, was to tell the story of a man who was attacked, robbed, beaten, and left for dead by the side of the road. Three different people had an opportunity to help the man, but only one took the time and effort to do so. Jesus’ point was that we have a responsibility to actively help those in need around us – whoever they may be.
When reading this story, we may fail to realize that sometimes those who consistently and willingly render aid to others in crisis may themselves be neighbors in need as well. This can especially be the case with those who serve as “first responders” in our community – those in emergency services, such as law enforcement officers, EMTs, paramedics, and firefighters. Being the first on scene in crisis situations day after day can be very stressful. Even simple, everyday pleasures that we take for granted, like eating at a restaurant, can be difficult for them when they have to leave a half-eaten meal to answer a call for help, constantly be on their guard against those who are hostile to authority, or silently endure thoughtless, snide remarks from other patrons. All of this takes an emotional toll after a while.
Last fall, God opened a door for us at GCOC to minister to this particular need. Every Tuesday, GCOC members provide a home-cooked meal for approximately 70-80 first responders of Hood County. The lunch is served from 11:00 – 1:00 at the Christian Service Center so they can come whenever they have a free moment and have a safe place to eat, relax and visit with one another. It has been a tremendous blessing for everyone involved. To see the smiles, hear the conversations, and experience the heartfelt gratitude of these public servants – who put their lives on the line for us and our community every day – completely overshadows any sacrifice it takes on our part to provide this service.
The Wednesday morning ladies’ Bible class has served as the base of support for this ministry. Since this class recesses for the summer, the Sunday morning Bible classes are being asked to share in this commitment through the summer months. The ministry organizers will be visiting each class soon to provide more details and instructions. Let’s be eager and willing to embrace this good work and do what we can to ensure its success. After all, it’s up to us to show the world what loving our neighbors is all about.
