Making a Change

Something has got to change.” Have you ever had this thought in regard to the condition of our country? Morals have steadily declined, openly sinful behavior is on the rise, and the ways of God have become increasingly marginalized and ridiculed. As Christians, what can we do to change this state of affairs?

In 2 Chronicles 7 we read of a time in Israel’s history when God’s people lived and functioned in a similar society. In verse 14, the Lord calls Israel to action, giving timeless principles that can be followed by His people of any age. But sometimes it seems that in applying these principles today, we tend to pick and choose the parts we want to hear, minimizing or leaving out the rest.  Mentally, we end up reading the verse like this:  “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

In situations like this, God does indeed call us to pray – for the leaders and people of our nation and for a change in the direction this country is going.  But we must realize that God will hear and answer those prayers only when those of us who are called by His name obediently fulfill the rest of His command – humbling ourselves, seeking His face, and turning from our wicked ways.

These lyrics from the song Man in the Mirror sum it up well:  I’m starting with the man in the mirror.  I am asking him to change his ways… If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.

Yes, something has got to change. And that change begins with me.

Jan Knox
