What do you get when you combine multiple generations of Christians together in a Bible class? One step closer to unity in the church!
At least that was the overwhelming assessment of those who participated in the intergenerational class mixing effort last fall. Volunteers from several Sunday morning adult classes, and even a handful of teens, agreed to attend a different Bible class of another generation for one quarter. They got to know people outside their normal circle of acquaintances by sharing in class discussions and social activities, and in some cases, were given the opportunity to serve as teachers for the class they were visiting. Members who remained in the classes were encouraged to welcome and include these guests in every aspect of their class.
In a follow-up survey, the vast majority of respondents said they enjoyed the experience (91%) and would be willing to participate again (81%). Some of the benefits they reported receiving include being nudged out of their comfort zones, meeting new people, observing different styles of teaching, experiencing diversity of discussion, gaining a different perspective, and seeing what other classes are doing to encourage one another and serve others. Several commented that it was a great experience and recommended doing it again.
We praise God for the success of this initial experiment in the pursuit of unity at GCOC and plan to launch similar efforts in the future. We pray for His continued blessing on our church family in this place.
