Sunday has been designated by our nation as a time to honor our mothers. On that morning, as we remember our own mothers and honor our families with new babies born in the past year, let’s also think about another group of moms whose overwhelming love and dedication to children is often overlooked.
Late last fall, the GCOC Neighbors class made the decision to use a portion of their weekly class donation to support special projects for Foster’s Home for Children in Stephenville. In thinking about the house mothers’ daily task of cooking for a houseful of children, it was suggested that the class buy an Instant Pot (a popular kitchen tool which minimizes cooking time) for each of the twelve residential homes. They collected money for several months, purchased and gift-wrapped the pots, and then traveled to Stephenville as a group a couple of weeks ago to present the gifts to these special moms who pour heart and soul into caring for children who have come from heart-wrenching backgrounds of abuse.
The moms were surprised and extremely grateful, quickly making plans to share recipes and ideas about how they could use the pots to bless others. As the class members toured some of the facilities on the campus, they became aware of further ways they could help in the future.
In 1 Corinthians 12:24, the apostle Paul says that in the body of Christ, God has given greater honor to those who lack it. May we continue to look for opportunities to join Him in honoring those who quietly and consistently serve others in the background.
