Three years ago this fall, God opened a door for us at GCOC to serve a group of people in our community who are often overlooked and sometimes even despised in our society. As a church, we host a meal at our Christian Service Center each Tuesday during the school year for Hood County “first responders” (law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, firefighters, etc). The lunch is served from 11:00 – 1:00 so they can come whenever they have a free moment and have a safe place to eat and visit with one another. It has been a tremendous blessing for everyone involved.
The Wednesday morning ladies’ Bible class has served as the base of support for this ministry. Meat is provided, but we count on volunteers for side dishes and desserts. This year, the entire congregation will have the opportunity to participate in this ministry through an online software program called SignUpGenius. Here’s how it works: This next week the church office will send an email to our members with a link to add your name, email address, and phone number to the volunteer list for this ministry. Those on the list will receive an email each week listing the items needed for the next week’s lunch. These items may be anything from a bag of chips to a homemade potato casserole. The volunteers who wish to help that week will simply follow the instructions to sign up to assist with set-up, clean-up, or providing a particular food item. When the sign-up is submitted, the program automatically updates the list of needed items and sends an email to the volunteer confirming the sign-up. An email reminder is also sent two days before the event.
The volunteers will choose when and how they will help and are not expected to help every week. Details such as times and places to drop off food, etc. will be sent to volunteers soon. If you have questions about the sign-up process, contact Menielle Donahoo at , and for questions about the ministry, contact Linda Guy at (817) 776-1328.
Please consider helping with this important outreach to our community!
