Mission of the Month - Paying It Forward

“Pay it forward” – when the recipient of a good deed returns the favor by helping someone else in need rather than paying back the original benefactor. While the practice of “paying it forward” has become popular in recent years, the concept has been around for centuries. In fact, we see it in Matthew 10 when Jesus sends out His apostles to preach the good news of the kingdom, heal the sick, raise the dead, and drive out demons with this reminder: “Freely you have received, freely give” (v. 8).

 

GCOC has partnered with missionaries Antenor and Phyllis Goncalves for almost two decades as they have worked with the church in Itu, Brazil. Through the years, this congregation has grown numerically and in their service to others, providing an annual camp for children (Camp Roots) and free medical clinic (CURA) in Itu. As their faith has matured, they have reached out more and more to those in need in their community.

 

This fall, they took “paying it forward” to the next level by sending a group of 16 members to Mozambique, Africa for a two-week mission trip to serve children, conduct a couples’ encounter, encourage the church leaders, and assist with medical needs and construction projects. One reason they chose this particular country is because both nations share a native language of Portuguese. Many lives were impacted for Christ through their efforts.

 

May all of us be alert to the opportunities God sends our way to “pay it forward!”
